35 'prominent Democrats' endorse Rep. Vern Buchanan

The Vern Buchanan campaign on Monday played up what it says are the congressman's bipartisan credentials, releasing the names of 25 "prominent Democrats" who have endorsed Buchanan and pointing to a Washington publication's report showing Buchanan is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress from Florida.

"We need more folks like Vern in Washington -- people with real world experience creating jobs and opportunity," said Democratic Bradenton Beach Mayor John Shaughnessy, in a news release issued by the Buchanan campaign. "I'm proud to endorse his re-election to Congress."

Buchanan's Democratic opponent in the Nov. 6 election also has tried to play up his bipartisan credentials. Over the weekend, former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist was in Sarasota to help raise money for Fitzgerald's campaign. Crist, a former Republican, now identifies himself as an independent.

Also, the Buchanan campaign noted that Congressional Quarterly, which analyzes lawmakers' voting records, had found rated Buchanan "as one of the most bipartisan members of the Florida delegation."

The local Democrats -- a list that includes numerous current and former elected officials -- who have endorsed Buchanan are:

Beth Waskom, attorney, Sarasota.
John Shaugnessy, mayor, Bradenton Beach.
Pat Morton, commissioner, Holmes Beach.
Hal Lenobal, former  mayor, Longboat Key.

  1. That's the kind of moderate, bipartisan person we need representing us in DC.

  2. Let's face it, the problems this country faces are going to require responsible adult leaders willing to work together. How Keith Fitzgerald could achieve this with his propensity to hurl incendiary charges and practice gutter politics
    is beyond me.
